Designing My Own Book Cover?

As a writer, all you do most of the time (I hope!) is write, right? 🙂

But today I was looking through Kindle Boards, a great place for meeting other self-publishing writers, and I was looking at everyone’s book covers. Now, being handy with CS3 myself (photoshop) I decided my hand at some design. The story I’m working on recently is about a girl who begins her life thinking she is blind, but she isn’t. When she was younger she had her eyes sewn shut and was told she was blind.

This is a fantasy story set in a time period where healing is predominantly a herbal and magical occurance. So, believing what she was told, she learns to fend for herself as a teenager. But there’s a reason her eyes have been sewn shut… and eventually she learns why.

No, I’m not going to tell you all why she’s had her eyes sewn shut. You can guess this later. However, I am wondering if any of you have any advice on whether to design your own book cover, or make one yourself? I’m wondering how much artists expect you to pay for the full rights to one of their creations. I guess it depends on how good the artist is.

Anyway, I’m getting off track. So here is what I came up with using Photoshop. The image was taken from Deviant Art and had changes made to it… here is the link back to the original link. The rights to this image remain with the author. I don’t own any of it.

Wow! I love it. It’s mysterious and beautiful at the same time. I like the brown ribbon over her eyes. It’s a dark color to match the dark experience of believing she’s blin d. I also like the background which looks like a forest that has become bare for some reason. Winter, maybe? But she’s not wearing a sweater. Armageddon? Also, when you can’t see something it is often said that you “can’t see the forest for trees.”

Thanks E.Raven. Yes, I like this as well. When you go to the original picture you can see that the girl has really red lips and the blindfold is red. And seeing as my story is not one about love or passion, which the original seems to express, I used Photoshop to change the colours a bit.

So maybe I will try my hand at designing my own book covers, then. 🙂
